Ultrasound 3-D sensing tech for improved gesture recognition – CES 2016
National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded small business Chirp Microsystems is developing an ultrasound 3-D sensing technology that lets users play music or check email on a tablet with the wave of a hand. David Horsley, company co-founder and professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California, Davis, explains the technology is based on sonar – the detection of objects using sound waves that bounce back. The Chirp ultrasound transducers are smaller and use less power than other options on the market, he says. The early-stage technology is funded through NSF's Small Business Innovation Research program and was featured at the 2016 International Consumer Electronics Show in the Eureka Park marketplace.
