Smartphone-compatible device to detect mislabeled drugs
A new more affordable, portable, smartphone-compatible spectrometer could soon help users detect mislabeled or fake pills. The device, which is being developed by NSF-funded small business Stratio, Inc., is based on a shortwave infrared imaging technology, which covers a broader spectrum range than other existing options. The early-stage optics research is being supported by the NSF Small Business Innovation Research program. Company CEO and co-founder Jae-Hyung Lee explains that the image sensors could also have potential applications in food safety and materials identification.
