What makes diamondback terrapins tick?

Mihai Pop, an associate professor of computer science in the Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at the University of Maryland (UMD), is working with UMD freshmen to sequence the genome of the diamondback terrapin. The reptile is perhaps best known as the university’s mascot, yet is also an important part of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. Maryland students involved in the project are learning both wet lab and DNA sequencing skills as part of the First Year Innovation and Research Experience program.
