Lasers In Flight

Lasers can transmit very large amounts of data, but transmission at high altitudes is problematic due to atmospheric interference and air turbulence.  The University of Notre Dame's Institute for Flow Physics and Control's Aero-Optics project is conducting research aimed at improving communications for airplanes in flight by finding ways to keep laser beems focused and fixed on their contact point.
