A whale of a ride

Barnacles are sticky little critters that hitch rides on the backs of humpback and gray whales. They hold a wealth of information that is helping scientists better understand how whales might respond to the current changes in Earth's climate. National Science Foundation-funded researchers at the University of California Berkeley have discovered that these barnacles record details about the whales' yearly travels and also retain this information long after they've ditched their ride and become fossilized.
