Atmospheric chemist Christine Wiedinmyer explains where smog comes from. It's a recipe that starts with the natural chemicals emitted by vegetation, which are harmless until they encounter the chemicals we produce from our daily activities, including manufacturing, driving and farming. Add some sunlight and you've cooked up a smog alert.
